DSP Recognition Week: 3 Reasons We Celebrate our DSPs
Each September, RISE Services, Inc. celebrates DSP Recognition Week. We honor each Direct Support Professional (DSP) who supports, loves, and cares for individuals living with disabilities. While we are always grateful for our amazing teams, this week, we wish to thank the hard-working employees who embody the three admirable qualities below.
1. Dedicated to the Individuals They Support
Devoted, faithful, loyal, steadfast, and dedicated – These words truly express what we see in our dependable DSPs. Not only are they committed to carrying out their duties to the best of their ability, but they are also passionate about showing love and respect as they work with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The job of a DSP is not always a glorious one. Nonetheless, in each interaction with the individuals they serve, they show compassion, patience, and kindness.
2. Willing to Be a Team Player
Performing the duties of a DSP does not always require teamwork, but many of our DSPs know being a team player makes their work more fun and effective. When our DSPs work together to teach individuals how to cook light meals or use public transportation, they set aside their personal agendas to enrich and enhance a single individual’s life. DSPs who recognize they are part of a larger purpose deserve acknowledgment for their humble and selfless attitude.
3. Eager to Wear Many Hats
The job of a DSP is much like the job of a parent — you must be ready and willing to offer help in various ways while ensuring the safety of those under your care. Our DSPs wear many hats to many different people. Some days, they are job coaches or mentors, and others, they are finance and budget experts or personal and home assistants. They also work with the families of people with disabilities, local employers and schools, foster and biological parents, and community programs and leaders. Our DSPs understand this can be tiring work, but they do it because they genuinely care.
