Clarifying Confusion About Disabilities
Individuals living with disabilities are one of the largest populations in the US and represent various ages, abilities, races, religions, ethnicities, socio-economic backgrounds, and more. There is an incorrect assumption that disabilities are only related to physical conditions or mental illnesses. The truth is that many adults and children live with a wide range of disabilities, including developmental disabilities, cognitive disabilities, neurological disorders, and speech and language impairments.
Understanding Disability Pride
Disability Pride Month honors each individual’s unique personhood and views disabilities as natural and beautiful elements of our human diversity. Sometimes, individuals living with disabilities are ashamed of their condition and feel their value is less than others. By celebrating Disability Pride Month, individuals with disabilities are encouraged to be proud of their uniqueness and embrace their value as equal members of society. Those with opposing or uneducated perspectives are encouraged to see the positive influence, distinct abilities, and true worth of individuals who live with disabilities.
Honoring Disability Pride Month
Disability Pride Month began with the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in July 1990. Since then, July has been recognized as Disability Pride Month and has grown into a global event. During this month, people celebrate disability culture by sharing their experiences and advocating for the equality of children and adults with disabilities. Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to take pride in their unique experiences and accomplishments, celebrating who they are and all they can achieve.
